The Fujita Scale....as described by Sean G. Douglas

Magnitude

Type

Winds

Scope of Damage

F0 Light 40-72 mph Branches break; damage to signs
F1 Moderate 73-112 mph Trailers moved off foundations
F2 Significant 113-157 Roofs torn off frame houses
F3 Severe 158-206 Trains overturned; trees uprooted; guyed transmission towers collapse
F4 Devastating 207-260 Well-built homes leveled; trees debarked
F5 Incredible 261-318 Houses carried long distances and demolished
F6 Inconceivable 319-379 Automobiles become missiles; asphalt thin concrete roadways stripped from ground; gadgets stripped from chase wagons
F7 Apocalyptic 380-442 Hail the size of basketballs; railroad track ripped from roadbed
F8 Cataclysmic 443-506 Bulldozers become missiles; tornado obvious enough that Sean can target and chase it
F9 Malevolent 507-570 Locomotives become missiles; long-buried coffins exhumed
F10 Primal 571-633 Reinforced steel and concrete buildings pulverized; sand turns to glass due to intense frictional heating
F11 Omega 634-703 Steamships become missiles; elitists' egos stripped away
F12 Impossible 704-1110 Chrome sucked off trailer hitches; diamonds reduced to graphite
F13 Ludicrious 1111-1850 Topsoil stripped down to bedrock; lakes drained; the course of rivers changed; tornado wind exceed the speed of sound, causing them to become quieter as they approach
F14 Warp 1851-2592 Causes a rift in the time-space continuum - be careful:  chasers from other eras could appear unexpectedly
F15 Aurora 2593-3333 This tornado may be a classified project at Groom Lake (Area 51), but you didn't hear it from me.

Hurricane Forecast Humor

(From TS Isidore Discussion 14):

DUST OFF THE CHAOS BUTTERFLIES OF MIT PROFESSOR ED LORENZ. BEYOND THREE
DAYS...THERE IS COMPLETE DIVERGENCE OF THE MODEL GUIDANCE...AS A SERIES OF SHORT
WAVES IN THE WESTERLIES SLIDE ALONG SOUTH OF THE MEAN TROUGH THAT SHOULD LINGER
OVER THE GREAT LAKES. EACH MODEL HAS ITS OWN PERSONAL INTERACTION OF ISIDORE
WITH A SHORT WAVE OF ITS CHOOSING...LEADING TO 5 DAY FORECAST POSITIONS RANGING
FROM THE YUCATAN TO JACKSONVILLE. IT IS SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE YET TO BE CONFIDENT
IN WHICH EVOLUTION WILL TURN OUT TO BE CORRECT...AS VERY SUBTLE CHANGES IN THE
POSITION OF ISIDORE THREE DAYS FROM NOW COULD TURN OUT TO BE VERY IMPORTANT.

New hail terms from Doug Kiesling

Since Golf Ball size hail turns into really being pea sized on video and the current reporting methods range from slang such as Marbles to Cats and Dogs and Frogs, the current reporting standards are about as reliable as Baghdad Bob. Someone at SPC came up with these new hail reporting codes and sources say this was put together by someone slaving over the storm reports trying to figure out what the heck was being reported the morning after a major storm outbreak... Confidential Emails said it was a new way to merge Corporate Advertising funds into the Government Agencies to help off set budget cutbacks due to the slow economy. This email that was sent in error went on to say "We do most of the work, we should get the advertising kick backs like all those TV Stations get... And we have the data first so we should get the advertising money first and besides, everyone knows that storm chasing is all but turning into freaking NASCAR any ways with the way some people drive and chasers getting sponsors now."

With all of the confusion over hail size and how to report it, sources say that some at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman OK are going to be testing out the new Hail Update Reporting Long Distance project or HURLD (Pronounced "Hurled") that was accidentally released to a couple storm chasers.

Term Hail Size
Local Calling Plan Pea Size Hail to Sleet.
Sprint Plan Hail that is on average about a dime size and lots of it
IDT Plan Some say Marble or Nickel size hail
MCI Plan Hail that is a mix of Sprint and IDT
AT&T Plan Hail that is a Quarter Size or larger
Phone Card A mix of all types of hail lasting for an extended period of time
Ten Ten Plan Hail that is larger then the the AT&T plan with large base ball size hail that damages your pocket book for the first 19 minutes then gradually changes over to a local calling plan after 20 minutes
International Call Very large damaging hail that will damage someone's pocket book big time.

So remember, the next time you call in your hail reports over your ham or cell phone, say your name, spotter number, your location, and your current phone plan.

Sometimes, the best part of a Local Storm Report is the comments. Hastings, Nebraska proved my point on May 11, 2005...
DARK CLOUDS AND OCCASIONAL APPARENT FUNNELS.
No! Not "dark clouds"! Anything but dark clouds!
HAIL IS FLAT AND PLATE LIKE.
Umm. Okay?
COOP OBSERVER REPORTED WIND GUST ESTIMATED AT 60 MPH. 0.54 INCHES RAIN. WHEN SHE CHECKED
RAIN GAGE SHE HEARD A ROAR ABOVE AND RAN INTO HOUSE.
She heard a roar? Where do we find these co-op observers?!
SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN GOLFBALL SIZED HAIL FALLING AT WOOD RIVER GOLF COURSE. FALLING FOR 5
MINUTES.
What do you suppose Mother Nature's handicap is?
A LITTLE BIT OF HAIL AND SOME FLOODING IN THE STREETS.
In Elm Creek, 1.5 inches is a "little bit" of hail.
HIGHWAY 40 2 MILE EAST OF MILLER...WASHED OUT. SOME VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THE FLOODING.
You have to keep an eye on those vehicles. They like to cause trouble...toilet papering trees, throwing eggs at houses, flooding roadways.
